Biography:

Born in New York, Gissel Gomez is a Mexican-American artist and writer. Inspired by the immigrant and working-class communities in which she grew up, she has long been interested in how labor shapes the handling and maintenance of the body. Primarily working with charcoal, she depicts the textures, contours, and movements of life forms and their landscapes. Her artwork has been recognized nationally and internationally in various publications and in art shows.

Gissel is a first-generation college student at Williams College, pursuing a double major in English and Studio Art. She was selected as a Mellon Mays Fellow in her sophomore year and was a visiting student at Oxford University her junior year. She is currently completing her Honors Thesis in Studio Art.
